All kittens under the age of 1 year old require another young cat. No exceptions. Kids and dogs are not substitutes.
Teeny tiny baby! Spruce is quite skittish and shy and is taking some time to adjust to me. She is definitely curious and starting to get more comfortable, but still skitters away from me anytime I'm moving around the house. She hides less than her foster sister Sassy Pants, but will retreat under the bed if there is too much movement.
